REMAKING brings remote work and digital nomadism to the policy debate in Athens

The REMAKING project held an International Policy Workshop in Athens on 18 September 2026, bringing together researchers, practitioners and experts to discuss how remote work and digital nomadism are reshaping territories, regulations, organisations and individuals.

Organised by the European Creative Hubs Network (ECHN), a REMAKING partner, and hosted at Romantso in Athens, the workshop aimed to disseminate REMAKING findings to a wider audience, stimulate debate on under-researched dimensions of digital nomadism and contribute to the development of an effective policy agenda.

The event opened with Antigoni Papageorgiou, from ECHN and Principal Investigator, who introduced the scope and aims of the REMAKING project. She also presented the first policy brief, “Remote work trends, digital nomadism, and the impact on cities and peripheries: The case of Greece.” The Portuguese perspective was presented by Eugenia Pires, from CoLABOR, another REMAKING partner, who introduced the second policy brief based on the project’s research in Portugal.

These contributions placed REMAKING’s own research findings at the centre of the workshop, particularly the work carried out within the project’s Digital Nomads case study in Greece and Portugal.

The second part of the workshop opened the discussion to external experts and stakeholders. A session on legal aspects and regulation of the Digital Nomad Visa featured Umberto Cattaneo, from the International Labour Organization, and Alkinoos Thomas Konis, from Nexus Law Firm.

The debate on territorial impacts included contributions from Dimitris Manoukas, from Politecnino di Milano, Maria Petrantantonaki, from the Development Company of the Region of Crete, Nelly Kouvelaki, from Phaos Coworking Space in Kalamata, and Androniki Kalfa, from Marketing Greece.

A final feedback session focused on the impact of remote work and digital nomadism on organisations and individuals, with contributions from Natalia Emmanouilidou, from Marketing Greece, and Stamatina Katsiveli, sociolinguist and group-analytic psychotherapist at the American College of Greece.

The workshop concluded with an open discussion and Q&A, allowing participants to respond to the findings presented by REMAKING members and exchange perspectives on the policy measures needed to address the changes associated with remote work and digital nomadism.
