REMAKING Workshop at Researchers’ Night: Exploring Migration Through Remote Work
As part of this year’s Researchers’ Night—a nationwide science popularisation event bringing together institutions across Czechia—members of the REMAKING consortium from The Prague University of Economics and Business (VŠE) hosted an immersive workshop inviting visitors to reflect on migration in Prague.
The session was closely connected to the team’s work on the “Enforced Migration Workers” case study within the REMAKING project. Participants were introduced to two contrasting newcomers to the city: a digital nomad and a person with temporary protection. These people, developed from real research data, first came to life in short videos recounting their first encounters with Prague.
In small groups, participants then discussed the challenges each person might face upon arrival, after three months, and after a year in the city. Through these conversations, unexpected common ground emerged—shared uncertainty, bureaucracy, and the gradual search for belonging—alongside recognition of the very different barriers shaped by status and circumstance. Many connected these insights with their own work or migration experiences, enriching the dialogue further.
By the end of the workshop, participants told they were leaving with not only new knowledge but also a deeper empathy and understanding of the diversity of migration journeys in Czechia.
The workshop was co-designed and led by VŠE team members Ivana Lukes Rybanska and Karolina Kania, showing how research on enforced migration can spark meaningful public conversations about the realities of migration today.
